PROJECT TYPES:

Science and Research

By incorporating our deep knowledge and global expertise in laboratory, vivarium and workplace design, we offer the best possible combination of planning professionals and technical resources.

CRISPR

Spark Therapeutics R&D Facility

PHILADELPHIA, PA, USA

New Research & Development Facility in Philadelphia’s University City.

Jacobs designed a laboratory & office space repurposing the 1955 Bulletin Newspaper Building by architect George Howe. The building and the gateway to Schuylkill Yards, which is intended to be a hub for scientific organizations in Philadelphia. The existing building is a concrete slab with a view of 30th station. In order to take the greatest advantage of daylight and views the ceilings in the office space were left open with the built elements constructed as “pods” that are not connected to the ceiling. A large skylight and open stair connecting the two floors allowed for daylight to reach the center of the deep floor plate. A unique approach of planning all workspace on one level and all laboratories on the upper level was taken to encourage collaboration between various groups. By celebrating the brutalist architectural elements and creating an energetic and colorful design the space met and exceeded the clients needs and aesthetic goals.

Spark Therapeutics Office & Pilot Plan Facilities

PHILADELPHIA, PA, USA

Office and Pilot Plan facilities in Philadelphia’s University City.

Jacobs continued to perpetuate the design aesthetic developed at the Bulletin Building in two of Spark’s other tenant space in University City. The first was a small 25,000 SF office space and the other being their 50,000 SF pilot plant and supporting work space. The client wanted both spaces to embodie the Spark brand and provide the same quality of space that was delivered at the Bulleting Building. Both spaces are in very modern high rise buildings which differed from the R&D facility, but thorugh the use of similar materials, open ceilngs and the lively color palette Jacobs was able to meet the clients objective.

Agios Pharmaceuticals

CAMBRIDGE, MA, USA

Jacobs’ design reinforces the client’s culture and helps to bring continuity and flexibility to the work environment.

The design expresses a balance between Agios’ focus on the patients they serve, and the collaborative and energetic culture of the organization. The space reflects Agios’ commitment to healthy lifestyle choices. The program includes a fitness center and the plan was designed with natural daylight in mind.

Laboratory spaces combine a new style of construction with reuse of existing laboratories for a functional and efficient design. Glass walls and break-out spaces provide continuity between the lab and office spaces, which were designed to provide a variety of space types for a flexible work environment. An interconnecting stair provides a continuity of space between floors and is located near an open café space that can accommodate a variety of events.

C4 Therapeutics

WATERTOWN, MA, USA

C4 Therapeutics is an early stage drug discovery company, whose mission is to harness targeted protein degradation to develop therapeutics for a broad range of diseases.

To support their growth into the next exciting stage of the company’s success, we are providing programming, design, and construction administration services to transform the 2nd floor of a newly renovated building in Watertown, MA. The fit up includes conference rooms, informal meeting spaces, open office spaces, private offices, café/multi-purpose room, and a variety of R&D labs together with lab support spaces.

Foundation Medicine Innovation Center

CAMBRIDGE, MA, USA

Jacobs’ design allows our client to evaluate the direction of their future workplace design by using a variety of room and furniture types.

Foundation Medicine is an innovative leader in genome technology and cancer biology, providing analysis for physicians to optimize cancer treatment.

Because the area was located in a less desirable corner of the building, it had to be transformed to be vibrant and playful as well as functional to attract people. The design incorporated a flexible working environment with a variety of furniture settings, rooms, and technology. Custom steam-bent and laminated wood “trees” define circulation and wrap around an open meeting nook. The program includes a coffee counter, closed and open meeting spaces, semiprivate collaboration spaces, and individual desks and phone rooms for heads down or private work.

Takeda Pharmaceuticals Vaccine Unit

CAMBRIDGE, MA, USA

The bright and airy space now links all coworkers visually between labs and office spaces, creating a collaborative environment.

Jacobs developed a light-filled facility that maximizes views between the open plan works-spaces and the labs for the Takeda Pharmaceutical’s new Vaccine Unit, relocating to Cambridge from 3 remote sites.

Offices and workstations surround the lab footprint, providing easy access for scientists between their wet bench and computer areas, and enhancing opportunities for collaboration by means of a number of conference, huddle, and focus rooms of varying sizes. Full-height glass walls ensure visibility and communication between lab users and office-based staff. Café spaces with reconfigurable furniture offer welcoming and multi-functional social spaces.

Kala Pharmaceuticals

WATERTOWN, MA, USA

The newly designed space reflects Hawaiian nature.

Our team created a two-story lab/office fitout with a mezzanine in a space with both high and low ceilings. The program included a reception, open and private offices, lounge and collaboration spaces, conference rooms, a café/multi- purpose space, varied chemistry and biology labs, and associated lab support spaces. Our design offered a selection of natural materials, organic shapes, greenery and an oceanic color scheme. The twenty-foot-high exterior windows let the daylight deep into the space.

The centrally located main cafe area is designed for large meetings through open space, reconfigurable furniture, and conference rooms. The open air lounge space and café counter support those working in the nearby labs. The main lab space features a large glass window overlooking the office space, allowing for a visual connection between the two space types.
