Designing for People: How Micron’s Team Member Center Redefines the Workplace
Creating a culture of collaboration, wellness and innovation in every space
Located at Micron’s Manassas, Virginia campus, the Team Member Center was envisioned as a central hub for connection, creativity and care. Designed primarily as the campus cafeteria, the facility includes a mix of fitness, wellness, collaboration and social spaces to support a diverse and growing workforce.
Jacobs’ design team worked closely with Micron to help the space reflect the company’s values. The architecture emphasizes transparency and flow, with visual connections between departments and natural light guiding movement throughout the building.
Lighting and mass timber were key design features, enhancing both aesthetics and functionality. Awarded the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) Illumination Award of Merit, the lighting strategy uses layered illumination to create zones for focus, relaxation and collaboration. The mass-timber coffer structural system creates an iconic and warm space. Recognizing this unique design solution, the Delaware Valley Association of Structural Engineers awarded the facility with its 2024 Outstanding Design Award.
A workplace built for people
The Team Member Center represents a strategic investment in culture and talent. Jacobs worked with Micron to create a space that:
- Supports employee wellbeing: Wellness and fitness rooms promote physical and mental health.
- Fosters collaboration: Technology-enabled meeting rooms and spaces that reinforce serendipitous encounters encourage interaction and cross-functional teamwork.
- Celebrates identity: Interior graphics, materials and spatial storytelling reflect Micron’s brand and heritage, creating a sense of pride and belonging.
- Achieves lighting excellence: The IES-recognized lighting design enhances spatial quality, supports productivity and creates a cohesive environment.
- Embodies sustainability: LEED Gold Certification, energy-efficient systems, low-VOC materials and smart controls reduce environmental impact.
Collaborative delivery from concept to completion
Jacobs led the design and delivery in close coordination with Micron’s facilities and workplace strategy teams. The project was guided by a shared vision: to create a space where every team member feels valued, supported and inspired.
Key delivery highlights included:
- Integrated design process: Architecture, interiors, lighting and complete engineering were developed together to maintain seamless coordination and performance.
- Stakeholder engagement: Regular workshops and feedback sessions ensured the design met the needs of many user groups, from engineers to HR staff.
- Attention to detail: From lighting and structural mock-ups, custom millwork and curated art installations, every element was chosen to elevate the experience and reflect Micron’s commitment to quality.
The Micron Team Member Center isn’t just a building, it’s a reflection of what matters most: people. By designing a space that empowers innovation and supports wellbeing, Jacobs helped Micron build what matters — for today and the future.

At Jacobs, we believe that the spaces we design should support the whole person: their work and their wellbeing, creativity and connection to others. The Micron Team Member Center reflects that philosophy. It’s a place where thoughtful design encourages balance, fosters belonging and empowers people to bring their best selves to work. This is how we build what matters — by creating environments that elevate both performance and quality of life.

Creative Respite within Industrial Campus
The Employee Team Center is a place of beauty, sanctuary, and inspiration born of an intense interdisciplinary process led by the Jacobs Buildings team. Our client envisioned a welcoming environment for employees working on its semiconductor campus. In response, we designed a luminous, pavilion-like building that gently rises from the landscape. As a stark contrast to neighboring fabrication facilities, the center is composed of flexible, multi-use spaces focused on people’s wellbeing. Exposed wood, tactile finishes, biophilic elements, and an organic modern style with neutral tones predominate, creating a sense of calmness and comfort.
Sustainability and Materials Innovation
This highly innovative mass timber, steel, and glass building represents the convergence of architectural form and engineering functionality. Glulam beams and cross-laminated timber bring warmth to the structure. We integrated WELL building standards into the design and ensured that natural light could reach all areas. Every design element responds to a broader cultural shift, specifically, the correlation between performance and wellbeing.
Employee Amenity and So Much More
A rich mix of employee amenities reflects our client’s investment in human capital. We seamlessly connected the mixed-use commons, an expansive fitness area, shaded outdoor dining terraces, and communal lounges. The design strategy involved creating space that is intentionally social and inherently restorative. Collaboration zones, quiet moments, and dynamic gathering spaces all work in concert to support the rhythms of work and life.
THREE KEY FEATURES
