Project Highlight: Navy Meets Public Needs During Pandemic and Beyond
During the pandemic, the U.S. Navy was challenged with continuing public meetings and outreach. Jacobs developed a digital public meeting space to allow rapid, accurate, and accessible communication to residents living near 14 facilities with drinking water potentially impacted by PFAS.
In 2020, we held our first “virtual open house,” which included a 3D room for residents to interact with meeting content and information typically communicated during in-person public outreach efforts. The meeting space included an interactive “find my property” map, allowing residents to easily confirm whether their property was within the sampling area, and incorporated real-time question and answer capabilities.
The Navy acknowledged the success of the virtual open house and continues to use this tool as a supplement to in-person public outreach efforts.

“Rather than providing Navy with the same type of deliverable that we are used to (such as a very ‘flat’ text-driven web site), they innovated and teamed with us to create something new. This is a very helpful type of contract support…they become more partners and advocates for us rather than ‘task executers.’ This is always great to have, but even more valuable when we are working on something that is pretty far outside of our technical comfort zone!”
